ENERCON steps up electromobility in transport logistics

Starting signal for electrification of lorry fleet: ENERCON presents the Volvo FH Electric as its first fully electric long-haul truck // Important contribution to reducing emissions and ensuring sustainability in the wind energy value

Today (18 November), ENERCON presented its first e-truck suitable for long-distance transport. In future, the 40-tonne Volvo FH Electric is to be used in transport logistics between the Aurich plant and other logistics hubs around the site. The truck, which has a range of 300 kilometres, will be charged at the company’s own 400 kW charging point installed on the premises.

‘The introduction of this first e-truck is an important milestone on our step-by-step journey to advancing the electrification of our transport logistics at ENERCON, contributing to reducing emissions in the wind turbine value chain while also lowering costs and dependence on fossil fuels’, says Hendrik Peterburs, Vice President ENERCON Global Logistics.

Comprehensive analyses of vehicle models, charging infrastructure, energy requirements, CO2 emissions and operating expenses were performed prior to making the decision in favour of electrification. The main objective was to ensure efficient logistics processes, which also took into account the required charging time and charging points. The current plan is for the e-trucks to be charged completely with wind energy at ENERCON’s charging point at the end of the working day. With a charging capacity of 250 kWh, charging to 80 % takes around one hour.

Savings of more than 40 tonnes of CO2  per year

Provided the truck is charged with green electricity, an annual saving of more than 40 tonnes of CO2 per e-truck is expected – corresponding to the average annual CO₂ footprint of four private households.1 Its use thus contributes directly to ENERCON’s sustainability strategy.

‘Wherever possible, we will switch to electric drive in the future. As we gradually convert the fleet, we want to ensure that our experience of use and the technical developments on the vehicle market are incorporated into the modernisation of our trucks’, says Peterburs. ‘To this end, we are in close dialogue with our drivers and with suppliers of electric lorries such as Volvo Trucks. In addition to our own fleet, we are also exploring new partnerships – for example with forwarding companies that are also focussing on electric vehicles.’

‘We are delighted when companies take the step towards electromobility. In these turbulent times, a clear vision and consistent commitment are essential. Volvo Trucks is leading the way with its products – but we also need committed companies to join us on this path. ENERCON is one such company, and we wish them safe and enjoyable travels at all times’, says Matthias Henning, Key Account Manager E-Mobility at Volvo Trucks Germany.

‘From the very beginning, our cooperation with ENERCON was characterised by foresight and a genuine desire to systematically reduce the environmental impact of the supply chain’, explains Arthur Kasperczyk, e-Mobility Sales Consultant at A+T Nutzfahrzeuge. ‘For almost four years, we have been testing various electric trucks with ENERCON. We have attended events together and thoroughly analysed all technical, economic and infrastructural aspects.’ ‘Comprehensive consultancy and customised solutions for the implementation of CO2 reduction targets are our core competence’, adds Michael Schaub, Sales Manager at A+T Nutzfahrzeuge in Garrel. ‘We are delighted to be able to see the result of this close and cooperative partnership with ENERCON today.’

Sustainability as a company principle

The protection of climate and the environment is firmly anchored in ENERCON’s corporate DNA. In future, ENERCON wants to do even more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its economic activities and has set itself the goal of halving both its direct emissions and the intensity of indirect emissions by 2030 compared to 2021. The electrification of transportation logistics, Service vehicles and company vehicles and the use of renewable energy in production processes and buildings are essential measures for implementing the strategy.
